The GSAS Academic Calendar is the table below that provides a schedule for students and faculty to meet important deadlines specified in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) Academic Rules. You can view the time and location of the scheduled GSAS events in the GSAS events calendar below the table. You may also find the Five-Year Academic Calendar (PDF) and other College Calendars useful.

Fall 2025

AUG. 26:

Classes begin at the University of Pennsylvania.

AUG. 27:

GSAS New Student Orientation

AUG. 28:

GSAS TA Orientation (required for new Teaching Assistants; encouraged for returning Teaching Assistants)

AUG. 28:

Registration opens (all class years).

AUG. 28-29:

Diagnostic Language Exams (GSAS Students in Greek, Latin and Classical Studies)

AUG. 28- SEPT. 10:

Add/Drop Period and registration through BiONiC for Fall 2025

AUG. 31:

Last day to .

SEPT. 1:

Labor Day: No classes at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ or the University of Pennsylvania.

SEPT. 2:

Classes begin at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥.

SEPT. 9:

Last day to add or drop a course at the University of Pennsylvania.

SEPT. 10:

Last day to add or drop a course at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥.

SEPT. 26:

Last day to change incomplete grades to S or U from the 2024-2025 academic year.

OCT. 9:

Last day to apply for M.A. Candidacy for a December degree via the online .

OCT. 9:

Last day to schedule a Fall 2025 Preliminary Examination. Note: No Preliminary Exam may be scheduled for the 30 days preceding December 15.

OCT. 9:

Last day to apply for via the online , for students planning to take Preliminary Examinations in Spring 2026.

OCT. 11-19:

Fall Break begins after last class on Fri., Oct. 10 and ends Mon., Oct. 20 at 8 am.

OCT. 27:

Last day to submit a dissertation for a December degree (GSAS students in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology, Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies and History of Art). Dissertations must be submitted no later than 6 weeks before the proposed defense date or Oct. 27, 2025, whichever is earlier. Dissertations should be formatted according to the Guidelines for Dissertation Format and Submission and submitted via the online .

OCT. 31:

Last day to apply for GSAS travel and research funds via the online . All applications submitted after Oct. 31 can still be considered but are not guaranteed.

NOV. 3-14:

Pre-Registration for Spring 2026

NOV. 15:

Last day to take a Ph.D. Preliminary Examination for Fall 2025.

NOV. 16:

Last day to submit a dissertation for a December degree (GSAS students in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics). Dissertations must be submitted no later than 3 weeks before the proposed defense date or Nov. 16, 2025, whichever is earlier. Dissertations should be formatted according to the Guidelines for Dissertation Format and Submission and submitted via the online .

NOV. 21:

Last day to apply to renew financial support for 2026-2027 via the online (continuing GSAS students in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology, Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies and History of Art). Students in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics do not need to submit the application.

NOV. 27–30:

Thanksgiving Break: begins after last class on Wed., Nov. 26 and ends Mon., Dec. 1 at 8 a.m.

DEC. 4:

Last day to take Ph.D. Final Oral Examination (Dissertation Defense) for a December degree.

DEC. 8:

Last Day of Classes at the University of Pennsylvania

DEC. 11:

Last Day of Classes at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥; All written work due 5 p.m.

DEC. 11:

Last day to complete written and/or oral M.A. Examinations for a December degree.

DEC. 12:

Last day to report course grades of M.A. candidates to the Registrar’s Office for a December degree (Faculty).

DEC. 12:

Last day to submit signed Record of M.A. Completion form to the GSAS office (Faculty).

DEC. 15:

Last day to deposit a final revised version of a dissertation for the December degree and for completion of all GSAS Ph.D. Completion Checklist items.

DEC. 18:

Last day to apply for Curatorial Fellowships via the online (continuing GSAS students in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology, Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies and History of Art).

DEC. 18:

Last day to submit supplemental materials for competitive fellowships for 2026-2027 (continuing GSAS students in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology, Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies and History of Art).

DEC. 20:

Winter Break begins after last exam on Dec. 19.

DEC. 24 - JAN. 1:

GSAS Office Closed.

Spring 2026

JAN. 14:

Classes begin at the University of Pennsylvania (Monday schedule).

JAN. 19:

Martin Luther King Day observed: No classes at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ or the University of Pennsylvania.

JAN. 16:

Last day to submit Coursework Reports for student work completed in Fall 2025 (Faculty).

JAN 16:

Registration opens for all class years in BiONiC.

JAN. 16-28:

Add/Drop Period

JAN. 20:

Classes begin at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥.

JAN. 27:

Last day to add or drop a class at the University of Pennsylvania.

JAN. 28:

Last day to add or drop a class at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥.

FEB. 27:

Last day to apply for M.A. Candidacy for a May degree via the online .

FEB. 27:

Last day to schedule a Spring 2026 Preliminary Examination. Note: No Preliminary Exam may be scheduled for the 30 days preceding May 15.

MAR. 17:

Last day to submit a dissertation for a May degree (GSAS students in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology, Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies and History of Art). Last day to apply for Supplemental Summer Funding via the online form.

APR. 6:

Last day to submit a dissertation for a May degree (GSAS students in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics). Dissertations must be submitted no later than 3 weeks before the proposed defense date or Apr. 6, 2026, whichever is earlier. Dissertations should be formatted according to the Guidelines for Dissertation Format and Submission and submitted via the online .

APR. 6-17:

Pre-Registration for Fall 2026

APR. 13:

Last day to submit for 2026 SSRF and/or SSRA funding.

APR. 15:

Last day to take a Ph.D. Preliminary Examination for Spring 2026.

APR. 29:

Last Day of Classes at the University of Pennsylvania

MAY 1:

Last day to take Ph.D. Final Oral Examination (Dissertation Defense) for a May degree.

MAY 1:

Last Day of Classes at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥; all written work due 5 p.m.

MAY 8:

Summer Research Orientation (required for all students receiving SSRF/SSRA awards). Note: Date is subject to adjustment.

MAY 11:

Last day to deposit a final revised version of a dissertation for the May degree and for completion of all GSAS Ph.D. Completion Checklist items.

MAY 12:

Last day to complete written and/or oral M.A. Examinations for a May degree.

MAY 12:

Last day to submit signed Record of M.A. Completion form to the GSAS office (Faculty).
