Biography
Christopher Barth serves as Vice President and Chief Information Officer and Constance A. Jones Director of Libraries at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥, where he is responsible for leading all strategic academic and administrative information support provided by Library and Information Technology Services (LITS).
Before arriving at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥, he served as Associate Dean and Director of Libraries and Archives at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he also taught as an instructor in the American History division of the Department of History. He has also served in library and technology leadership positions at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. At these institutions, he gained significant experience working in merged library and technology organizations in higher education. Before his work in academic libraries, he worked as Librarian and Online Editor for the Anchorage Daily News in Anchorage, Alaska.
The intersection of libraries and technology innovation has long been a strong professional focus for Mr. Barth, from the early days of the internet and the World Wide Web to the current advancements in generative AI. His most recent work has been reconsidering how to design and deliver academic library services, particularly information literacy instruction, alongside new AI tools that transform the research process and the possibilities for scholars to interrogate and understand information and data.
Mr. Barth holds graduate degrees in Library and Information Science and History from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kenyon College with High Honors in History. He is a member of the American Library Association and the Association of College and Research Libraries. He has served on the faculty of the Archives Leadership Institute, sponsored by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, served as a lecturer in the School of Information at San José State University, served as an elected member of the FEDLINK Advisory Board, and served as Council Chair and Board Member of ConnectNY, a New York state consortium of academic libraries.
